Volunteers of America Greater Baton Rouge has been serving individuals and families since 1921 when Major Arthur Belcher and his wife, Corrie, established an office in Baton Rouge. In 1938, they purchased this building, located at 319 St. Phillip Street (now the site of the River Center), which served as an emergency shelter where the poor were given food and beds. They retired in 1954 after 50 years of service to the organization.
Today, with a staff of over 400 and the help of 1,884 volunteers, we serve 19 parishes in South Louisiana including the Greater Baton Rouge, Acadiana and Southwest Louisiana regions.
