Volunteers of America Greater Baton Rouge provides support services to low-income women and men over the age of 18 who are living with HIV/AIDS in Ascension, East and West Baton Rouge, East and West Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston and Pointe Coupee parishes. We assist approximately 400 HIV positive individuals with case management services and 32 clients and their families through our housing programs.
Ryan White Part A Case Management
The HIV/AIDS Services program brings hope to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Through case management programs such as Ryan White, individuals living in Region II receive care coordination, medication, housing, utility, food, dental and transportation assistance. Our Benefits Specialist program provides assistance with applying for Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, patient assistance programs, food stamps, and unemployment benefits. Mental health and substance abuse services are offered as well as a support group just for men living with HIV/AIDS and the transgender population.
Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI)
Provides intensive medical case management to recently diagnosed HIV consumers or to those that know their positive HIV status and have not accessed medical care services in at least 6 months or greater by utilizing MAI funding. The program specifically targets African Americans and Latinos who are homeless, have substance abuse issues, mental health issues, formerly incarcerated and Men who have sex with men. Clients, also, receive transportation and housing assistance while enrolled in MAI.
The Peer Advocates meet with clients to foster a relationship and help the clients cope with their diagnosis. Clients are linked to medical care and medical case management. The Advocates provide the clients with information on living with HIV disease, discuss the benefits of entering and remaining in care, provide guidance on how to navigate the system of care and how to obtain needed services.
Heterosexual Men's Support Group
This group is for HIV positive heterosexual men. This group fosters a "brotherhood" mentality for its members and empowerment of the heterosexual HIV+ male. The group will meet every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Tuesday of the month from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm. Transgender Support Group
This group does not require its members to be HIV+; however, positive individuals are encouraged to attend. Members do not have to disclose their statuses with the group, but talks on the subject are welcomed. Members can be MTF (Male to Female) or FTM (Female to Male). This group will meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Members must be evaluated by mental health and substance abuse counselor Renarda Ford, LMSW. Please contact Renarda Ford at 225-925-2372.
Substance Abuse Treatment Group
This group is for individuals eligible for Ryan White services. Group is held every Wednesday from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm. Please contact the facilitator, Lindsay Allen, M.S., CRC, CI, at 225-925-2372,or have your case manager complete a referral to schedule an initial screening before attending.
